What is a positive affirmation?

Thoughts are a powerful thing! Our relationships, our careers, our actions, our choices are all guided by our thoughts. They shape how we respond in certain situations and impact how others perceive us. A positive affirmation is a statement we repeat to ourselves to take control of our mind and our actions.

 

Why do we need them?

Our minds can often be a negative place and we often need to work hard to combat this. If you have a negative affirmation in you mind, you will consciously and subconsciously live up to this statement (known as the self-fulfilling prophecy in psychology). For example, an affirmation such as 'I am stupid' may lead you to focus less on your studies ('there's no point – I'm stupid') or change your actions ('I won't read this book – I'll never understand it!') Positive affirmations change your perception and help you to move your path in the right direction.

 

How does it work?

There is a brilliant metaphor in Robert Anthony's Beyond Positive Thinking, which I would like to share with you. He describes the mind and it's negative thoughts as a jug of dirty water. The jug is in the sink and a tap is dripping slow, consistent droplets of fresh water (positive affirmations) into the jug. One droplet alone isn't enough to change the purity of the water however over time the fresh, clean water will displace the dirty water. Your job is to drop positive affirmations into your mind and change your actions to follow them.

 

How do I find the right affirmation for me?

The most important thing for an affirmation to work is that you can connect with it. For example, if you want to lose weight, you may feel an affirmation such as "I am slim" feels dishonest. So perhaps, an affirmation like "I am healthy" can shape your decisions now and help you along the right path. Or maybe connecting with others is easier... an affirmation like "I am beautiful" may seem vain however an affirmation such as "I am beautiful and everyone around me is beautiful" would work for you.
